• Patients with peritoneal mesothelioma eventually have exploratory surgery of the abdomen (laparotomy), with
  an open directed biopsy . Sometimes a simpler procedure, peritonoscopy , may yield enough tissue for
  diagnosis. An adequate biopsy is essential, since peritoneal mesothelioma can be confused with
  adenocarcinomas arising in other tissues, especially the ovary.
